Swift Parrot found in Forster🌿"HOPE TAKES FLIGHT: ENDANGERED SWIFT PARROT RESCUED & RELEASED BACK INTO THE WILD"🍀FAWNA, BirdLife Australia, and MidCoast Council have worked closely together to look after a critically endangered swift parrot and release it back into the wild. This special bird breeds in Tasmania before migrating across Bass Strait to the Australian mainland over Autumn and Winter. This is the longest migration of any parrot in the world.Unfortunately, the long journey for one of these parrots was temporarily interrupted in Forster. Fortunately, the injured bird was found and handed in to a local vet by a concerned local on the 22 April.“The bird was injured and was unable to fly. It needed expert care before it was well enough to return to the wild,” said Rob Kyte from BirdLife Australia. Fortunately, that care was provided by experienced local FAWNA wildlife carers, Gail Whitwell and Rejane Chapman.Once the bird was strong enough, the search for an appropriate site for release began with assistance from Council. “The swift parrot was released near Bungwahl. The area contained abundant flowering paperbarks and swamp mahogany trees, which are known to be important food sources. The release site was chosen to give it the best chance to find its flock again,” said Mr Kyte. One of the FAWNA carers, Gail Whitwell said “This is a fantastic outcome for everyone. Every bird counts when it comes to saving a critically endangered species.” “We called the bird Tay Tay because the flying distance of this little bird is comparable to the journey of the famous singer when she was in Australia” said Mrs Whitwell.#FAWNA NSW INC #WILDLIFE HEROES ... Help FAWNA Volunteers Help WildlifeDid you know?Rescued wildlife in rehabilitation need special food.Joeys don’t tolerate lactose and marsupial joey milk can cost up to $8 a litreFAWNA spent over $31,000 on wildlife food in the last 12 monthsVolunteers spent another $10000 or more$17000 value of marsupial milk was given to volunteers for their charges$5000 in special bird feeds and $6000 for flying-fox fruitOver 4500 animals were helped – we need ongoing support to operateLast year on NSW Mid North Coast FAWNA volunteers operated over an area of 18000 sq km. They give of their time freely with animal rescue and care, and telephone rescue line duties. They spend large sums themselves on their wildlife rescue and rehabilitation with vehicle costs, enclosures, pouches and bedding, medications, heating and power. FAWNA buys in the expensive wildlife foodstuffs and milk formulae in bulk and reimburses members’ costs for meat, seed, fish, fruit and veg needed for their wildlife patients. There is no formal funding (that’s right, Government does not fund wildlife groups to help rescue and look after wildlife) and FAWNA relies on membership fees, the generosity of public donations and grants to keep running. Around 4,500 animals are rescued annually bringing a huge cost to the group to ensure they are well fed prior to their release back to the wild. In the last 12 months FAWNA spent over $31000 feeding the wildlife in care and members spent more and we are asking the community to help us with this work.www.fawna.org.au/donating-to-fawna/ ...
